Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy is an umbrella term for nature-based approaches to relaxation healing.

As part of the Tranquility house holistic approach, we focus on two aspects of visual relaxation - indoor & outdoor

Tranquility House Ecotherapy Indoor Visuals:

While direct contact with nature has many benefits,

individuals need not spend time in a natural environment

to experience the positive effects of nature.

Studies have found that glimpsing nature though plants,

colours & art improves mood, mental health, and life

satisfaction.

Through a team collaboration project, the unique

aesthetic of Tranquility House was artistically designed

using the positive effects of nature to work on both physical and mental health.

Tranquility House Ecotherapy Nature Activities:

The types of activities at Tranquility House, depending

on individual interests, can extend outside to take place

in nature with the guidance of a qualified Disability Support

Worker.

Some activities are done in groups while others require a

one-on-one setting depending in individual preferences.

Nature meditation: This meditation takes place in a

natural setting and is sometimes done in a group.

Members of the group may identify something in nature which

attracts them and then spend a few minutes contemplating how

this aspect of nature relates to them and what they can learn

from it. For example, an elderly person struggling with feelings of worthlessness might develop greater self-respect after meditating on how the older trees in a forest provide shelter for birds and shade for younger plants. The activity usually ends with group members sharing what they learn.

Horticulture: The use of plants and garden-related activities can be used to promote well-being. Activities may include digging soil, planting seedlings, weeding garden beds, and trimming leaves.

Physical movement in a natural environment: This can include relaxation

activities such as walking, jogging, or strolling in a park.

Involvement in conservation activities: The act of restoring or

conserving the natural environment can assist in creating a

sense of purpose and hopefulness. Since this activity is usually

done in groups, it also helps foster a sense of belonging and

connectedness while simultaneously improving one's mood.

All of these types of activities foster increased awareness of the

natural world and carefully used within the respite stay ,

can reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and anger.
